The Great Basin Film Society
Movies, by their very nature, are deceivers. They parade still images before our eyes and trick us into seeing fluid movement. Half the time we spend watching movies we sit in total darkness because the projector shutter is closed and no light hits the screen. But, didn't Jean-Luc Godard also say, "Cinema is truth 24 times a second."? The fact is, motion pictures can be tricksters and truth-tellers simultaneously and many other things, as well. They can also be teachers, entertainers, comedians, tragedians, confessors and experimentalists. Their range of expression is as great as any of the artforms. The members of the Great Basin Film Society are interested in promoting film as an artistic medium. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of films that are not currently being shown in our fair city. We intend to provide opportunities for the residents of the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area to view films that: 1) have not been previously shown in Reno; 2) have not been shown in theaters in many years; or 3) are not readily-available on video. These films are commonly referred to as art-house, independent, and classic films. Would a serious reader accept a market in which only the top-20 book titles were sold in any given week?
We show films (sometimes video) that we, the GBFS people, like to see. If you disagree with our taste, let us know. You know what they say about opinions. We're open to suggestions. Take a chance on the Great Basin Film Society. Other theaters don't love you. We do. |
