It's late-Victorian London among the aristocracy and the battle between the sexes has just commenced. Richard Halton (Roland Culver) is a man of social standing and not much income. Maria Wislack (Beatrice Lillie) is a woman with quite a bit of both, but she's a little lonesome and not getting any younger. Maria believes she's struck upon a solution when she proposes a month-long trial marriage between her and Richard at her country estate in Scotland. Tagging along for the holiday are Maria's friend Helen Hale (Googie Withers), a rich American pickle heiress, and Richard's friend George (Clive Brook), the no longer wealthy 10th Duke of Bristol. The Scottish servants, seeing that two unmarried couples will be co-habiting under one roof, resign en masse. This leaves just the four to fend for themselves; preparing meals, running errands and keeping house. Richard ingratiates himself with Maria by being an attentive "spouse" and Helen is good as gold because she truly is that kind of person. However, Maria and George could not be more abrasive company; being so alike in their lack of consideration for others. Quips worthy of Oscar Wilde fly fast and furious among this unsuitably matched quartet, giving delight to the viewer, grateful to have the motion picture screen as protective barrier.
