CHARLIE CHAN IN RENO

Director: Norman Foster
Year: 1939
Runtime: 70 min.
Country: USA
Language: English
Color: B&W
Format: 16mm

Mary Whitman, recently arrived to Reno for a quickie divorce, is found standing over the lifeless body of a fellow female hotel guest. Local authorities prefer the simplest solution — Mary killed her husband's mistress for breaking up their marriage, but plenty of others staying at the hotel had their own reasons for wanting to see the murdered woman dead. Honolulu police detective Charlie Chan (Sidney Toler) is summoned to Nevada to assist in the case and he gets "help" from his number two son, Jimmy (Victor Sen Yung), who happens to be on break from his college studies in nearby California. The investigation leads to a nocturnal visit of a beautifully atmospheric ghost town.

"Norman Foster guides the proceedings with a sure hand and his own approach to humor."
