DER BLAUE ENGEL (The Blue Angel)

Director: Josef von Sternberg
Year: 1930
Runtime: 100 min.
Country: Germany
Language: German with English subtitles
Color: B&W
Format: 16mm

This Josef Von Sternberg film, based on Heinrich Mann's novel Professor Unrat, made Marlene Dietrich a star and began a tumultuous relationship between star and director that spanned Sternberg's most creative period. The film stars Emil Jannings as Dr. Immanuel Rath, a provincial prep school teacher who becomes incensed when he learns his boys have become infatuated with Lola Lola (Dietrich), a cabaret singer. Heading to the Blue Angel, a nightclub, to catch his pupils, Rath instead becomes bewitched by the sensuous Lola himself, beginning an obsession that drives him to the depths of despair. Visionary, haunting, and emotionally unrelenting, DER BLAUE ENGEL stands as Sternberg's crowning achievement.

"With Dietrich at her least sentimental, Jannings at his most naked, everything conspires to make DER BLAUE ENGEL an indelible screen tragedy." — Peter Bogdanovich, Movie of the Week

" One of the masterpieces of the early sound era." — Richard Gilliam, All Movie Guide

"Not only is Mr. Janning's and Miss Dietrich's acting excellent, but they are supported by an unusually competent cast." — Mordaunt Hall, The New York Times
