It's close to midnight in pre-war London on Chinese New Year's Eve. Crystal Shakleford (Geraldine Fitzgerald) returns to her apartment with solicitor Jerome Arbutny (Sydney Greenstreet), a man she just picked up from the street. But, what's this? Another man is already there waiting. He's Johnny West (Peter Lorre), a small-time crook Crystal picked up earlier in the evening. She shows the two men her statuette of Kwan Yin, the Chinese goddess of luck and fortune, and tells them the legend of Kwan Yin granting the common wish three strangers make before her idol on this night. The three agree to buy one-third shares in a sweepstakes ticket and equitably divide the winnings should their horse come in first at the Grand National. They go their separate ways and we learn about the questionable characters and motives of Crystal, Jerome and Johnny until circumstances worthy of O. Henry reunite the trio.
