LE CORBEAU (The Raven)

Director: Georges Clouzot
Year: 1943
Runtime: 94 min.
Country: France
Language: French with English subtitles
Color: B&W
Format: 16mm

Some of the nastiest characters to ever cross in front of a camera are gathered in a small French town, where a poison pen writer takes note of all the nastiness and sends the town into near hysterics. Pierre Fresnay plays the local doctor whose origins are rather mysterious; originally the target of the letter writer, he later is suspected of being the writer as everyone becomes suspicious of everyone else. But the real culprit is the person considered the least likely candidate.

"Clouzot, often called the French Hitchcock, is not just a master of suspense but is also most adroit at implicating his audience." — J. Hoberman, The Village Voice
