A recently promoted police inspector (Gian Maria Volonte) slits his mistress' throat one Sunday afternoon. He then plants phony evidence and makes an anonymous call to report the crime. The police unearth some clues that point to the inspector, but ignore them due to the suspect's standing. The killer eventually writes a confession and awaits his capture, while planning to receive aquittal.
