Boris and Veronica are two young people very much in love until war with Germany breaks out and Boris is sent to the front lines. In his absence and with no word from him, Veronica enters a loveless marriage with Boris' brutish cousin. Events, happy and sad, transpire in Veronica's life before she receives news of Boris' death in action. By this time, she's grown to become a more resilient, though less spontaneous woman.
