Country: UK/USA
Language: English
Color: Color
Format: 16mm

New York writer Helene Hanff (Anne Bancroft) savors books both as physical objects and as vehicles for meaning, but she's a tough customer to please. The titles she seeks are unavailable in Manhattan bookshops so it's with hope and excitement that she responds to an ad placed by a London bookseller offering to do mail orders for American readers. Her inquiry lands on the desk of Frank Doel (Anthony Hopkins) of Marks & Co. located at 84 Charing Cross Road and thus begins a 20-year correspondence. Despite their differing temperments — hers, upfront and opinionated; his, reserved and scholarly — they form a friendship meaningful to each of them. Helene intends to travel to London, but circumstances never seem to allow a meeting to take place.

"By a miracle of writing, acting and direction, what could have been a deadly moviegoing experience (a discussion of literature) is turned into something like pure gold." — Ken Hanke, Mountain Xpress

"Anne Bancroft brings Helene Hanff alive in all her dimensions, in the process creating one of her most memorable characters."Variety
