An excellent documentary on the way films look and how the art of photographing movies can contribute as much, if not more, than cast, director and script. Scenes from 125 films, from Birth of a Nation to Goodfellas are shown, with commentary from a number of cinematographers, including Gordon Willis, William A. Fraker, Conrad Hall, Ernest Dickerson, Vilmos Zsigmond and Michael Chapman, on how they achieved certain effects and their collaborations with the directors of the films.

"[A] vibrant, gloriously documented tale of the evolution of motion-picture photography, told in the words of the cinematographers themselves." — Vincent Canby, The New York Times

"VISIONS OF LIGHT is a documentary that will likely cause everyone who sees it to look at movies a little differently in the future." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"If you care about movies, this film is absolutely required viewing." — Hal Hinson, Washington Post
