CLUNY BROWN

Director: Ernst Lubitsch
Year: 1946
Runtime: 100 min.
Country: USA
Language: English
Color: B&W
Format: 16mm

The tranquil world of Lord and Lady Carmel is put askew when Cluny Brown (Jennifer Jones), an orphaned Cockney lass, is hired as a maid at their country estate. Cluny is a plumber's niece and a whiz at fitting lengths and joints of pipe together, but she's completely inept when it comes to properly fitting herself into classbound rural society. She does, however, have an amused and sympathetic ally in one of Carmel Manor's houseguests--Adam Belinski (Charles Boyer), an exiled Czech author. He's poor, but he's still attractive and attracted to Miss Brown.

"A lovely, easygoing comedy full of small surprising touches." — Pauline Kael, The New Yorker

"A delectable and sprightly lampoon. Among the year's most delightful film comedies."The New York Times

"The funny lines come fast and with an expertise of delivery that makes them feel impromptu."
— Bob Mastrangelo, All Movie Guide
