A film of rare visual daring and imagination in which each frame is meticulously and attentively designed, FELLINI'S CASANOVA is amongst Italian maestro Federico Fellini's most sumptuous productions. In an astonishing performance, Donald Sutherland portrays Casanova in his waning days, travelling from a bubonic-plagued Venice to a syphilitic London and a tubercular Germany and engaging in various amorous and political adventures with an air of bored detachment. Imbued with a romantic pessimism, the film debunks the myth of Casanova as a great lover and instead presents him as an ordinary man swept along by extraordinary circumstances. Featuring a compelling and complex score by Fellini's longstanding collaborator Nina Rota, FELLINI'S CASANOVA also boasts Oscar winning costume designs by Danilo Donati.

"An elegiac farewell to an era of Italian cinema. Sutherland's performance is the most astonishing piece of screen acting since Brando's in Last Tango in Paris."Time Out

"One of the late flowerings of the director's claustrophobic studio style at its most deliberately artificial, this is a memorable work, helped along by Nino Rota's music and Danilo Donati's Oscar-winning costumes."
— Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

"CASANOVA is a critic's dream of aesthetic design. With Amarcord it shows Fellini at the height of his powers." — Don Willis, Film Quarterly
