THE PHENIX CITY STORY

Director: Phil Karlson
Year: 1955
Runtime: 100 min.
Country: USA
Language: English
Color: B&W
Format: 16mm

Perhaps the ultimate noir exposé flick, this Phil Karlson helmed docudrama relates a fact-based story of corruption and vice gone amok in a Southern town and the efforts of a crusading D.A. to clean it up. The versatile John McIntyre plays the D.A. whose efforts against the Syndicate are literally short-lived with Richard Kiley as his son who takes up the reform gauntlet. Cult favorite Karlson (Kansas City Confidential, 99 River Street) directs the proceedings with all the raucous energy and startling brutality of his best noir potboilers.

" THE PHENIX CITY STORY is among the most realistic crime dramas of the 1950s. Few have captured so well the ambiance and tenor of their "based on a true story" events." — Richard Gilliam, All Movie Guide

"Raw, gritty and hard. Phil Karlson's 1955 film noir is every bit as sleazy as the subject it treats."
— Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader
