Many people think experiencing underground film means having to endure watching a man sleep for six hours, but it ain't necessarily so. On September 6, the Great Basin Film Society will present a quartet of short films which proves that humor and playfulness can indeed be successful and entertaining facets of experimental cinema.

"HOLD ME WHILE I'M NAKED" (1966, 15 min., Color, 16mm, directed by George Kuchar)

A self-reflexive examination of a young, frustrated filmmaker who suspects that most everyone is having a much better time than he is.

"DANGLING PARTICIPLE" (1970, 18 min., B&W, 16mm, directed by Standish Lawder)

Old classroom sex hygiene films are re-edited and set to organ accompaniment performed by Bruce Lieberman.

"TAKE OFF" (1972, 10 min., B&W, 16mm, directed by Gunvor Nelson)

A professional stripper goes through her paces in front of the camera when things begin to take off in an entirely unexpected direction.

"THE SECRET CINEMA" (1966, 28 min., B&W, 16mm, directed by Paul Bartel)

A paranoid fantasy in which Jane, an ordinary office secretary, comes to believe awkward moments from her private life are being surreptitiously filmed and clandestinely exhibited for the amusement of the city's hip in-crowd.

As always, free fresh-popped popcorn!
