Director Ken Loach, who has explored the gritty, painful struggles of British working-class life in films such as Riff-Raff (1990) and My Name Is Joe (1998), presents a based-in-fact story about a woman whose deep love for her children is no match for her inability to control her own life. Maggie, as played by comedian Crissy Rock in an astounding film debut, suffers the open wounds of abuse as both child and adult, leaving her vulnerable, mistrustful and quick to anger. As a result, her four children (by different men) are taken from her, and her attempts to get them back run up against the brick walls
of indifferent government bureaucracy and her own raging frustration. This unflinching, brutally honest film, anchored by Rock's raw, emotionally charged performance, won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 1994 Berlin International Film Festival Jury, where Rock also won the Silver Bear for Best Actress.
