THE EEL (Unagi)

Director: Shohei Imamura
Year: 1997
Runtime: 117 min.
Country: Japan
Language: Japanese with English subtitles
Color: Color
Format: 16mm

Co-winner of the Cannes Palme d'Or (with Taste of Cherry), The Eel is a highly original blend of quirky black comedy, offbeat romance, and surreal fantasy from grand master Shohei Imamura. Koji Yakusho plays Yamashita, a buttoned-down salaryman who savagely murders his adulterous wife. Paroled eight years later, he settles in a remote seaside community, where he confounds his neighbors with his peculiar attachment to his sole friend and confidant: a per eel. The hero's eel-like existence is disrupted by Keiko, a would-be suicide whose life he reluctantly saves.

"Yakusho and Ms. Shimizu deliver unerring performances in a splendid film that harvests hope from a bleak landscape." — Lawrence Van Gelder, The New York Times

"Unpredictable and captivating." — Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times
