THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC
(La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc)

Director: Carl Theodor Dreyer
Year: 1928
Runtime: 117 min.
Country: France
Language: Silent with English intertitles
Color: B&W
Format: 16mm

Basing his film on the transcript of Joan's trial, Danish director Carl Dreyer sought maximum intensity by confining the action to her cell and the trial chamber, shooting almost entirely in close-ups, refusing makeup, and even forbidding a musical accompaniment. One of the classics of silent cinema. Antonin Artaud (creator of the "theatre of cruelty") plays an inquisitor.

"One of the greatest of all movies. Falconetti's Joan may be the finest performance ever recorded on film."
— Pauline Kael, The New Yorker
