Satyajit Ray's first film (and first of a trilogy) put Indian cinema on the map. Taken from a semi-autobiographical novel, it portrays the childhood of a young Bengali boy growing up in a ruined, yet magically beautiful, landscape of poverty and squalor. Music by Ravi Shankar.

Winner for Best Foreign Film, 1958 National Board of Review

"One of the legendary debuts in the history of film. Exquisitely beautiful... told with compassion and humor. An unqualified masterpiece." — Edward Guthmann, San Francisco Chronicle

"As deeply beautiful and plainly poetic as any movie ever made. Rare and exquisite."
— Hazel-Dawn Davenport, L.A. Weekly
