BEND OF THE RIVER

Director: Anthony Mann
Year: 1952
Runtime: 91 min.
Country: USA
Language: English
Color: Color (Technicolor)
Format: 16mm

The survival of an Oregon community of the 1840's is threatened when a wagon train transporting vital supplies is hijacked by profiteers. For assistance, the settlers turn to an enigmatic wagon train guide whose loyalties are governed by pragmatic concerns. Played out against pictorially stunning locations in the Columbia Valley, Bend of the River is notable for the ambivalent relationship between the self-imposed outcast James Stewart and his protector-destroyer Arthur Kennedy.

"A sensational Anthony Mann western. Recommended for Mann's relentless psychological intensity and his smooth way with action in an epic setting." — Don Druker, Chicago Reader
